Devour Locust Fork 46-8!
|DORA -- Winning seasons have been a thing of the past at Dora
High School, at least until Friday night. The No. 9-ranked Dora Bulldogs
improved to 6-0 on the year and secured its first winning season since 1994
with a 46-8 win over the Locust Fork Hornets (2-4) at Horace Roberts Field.
The win also locked up a playoff spot for the Bulldogs, who now have a 4-0
record in Class 3A, Region 6. It will be Dora's first trip to the postseason
"We did a good job of moving the football tonight," Dora head
coach Johnnie Wright said. "Everybody got to play and I think everybody
played well while they were out there. Winning is fun. We've been tough
on these guys during practices, but that's only because we want them to
have fun on Friday nights. Our players have done everything we've asked
them to do and it has paid off. We've accomplished our first goal and that
was to make the playoffs. Now we need another win to secure a home game
in the first round."
|The Bulldogs' offensive line, led by seniors Nate Corley, Bradley Isbel
and Troy Miller, opened up hole after hole to allow Dora's running backs
free room to roam for 313 yards on the ground. Four Dora players finished
with at least 45 rushing yards and a touchdown. Steven Harrison led the
Buldogs with 95 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Chase Pierce added
75 yards and a score on nine carries. Freshman Eric Woods had 48 yards and
two touchdowns on four carries, and wide-out Randy Parker finished with
a touchdown and 47 yards on three carries.
"We challenged the guys
at halftime to be more physical in the second half," Wright said. "They
did that in the second half and it allowed us to take control of the game.
It was a tough first half and Locust Fork deserves the credit for that.
They tried to force us to pass, but we made a few adjustments at halftime."
||Dora's first score came at the 8:27 mark of the first quarter
when Harrison broke a couple of tackles and rumbled down the sidelines for
a 34-yard run to the end zone to put Dora up 6-0. Only two possessions later,
the Bulldogs added to that lead when Parker returned a Locust Fork punt
57 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Jorge Williams hit Steven Berry for
the 2-point conversion to give Dora a 14-0 advantage with 3:07 left in the
first quarter. Locust Fork cut into the Dora lead with 9:01 left in the
first half when Joseph Washburn fought his way across the goaline for a
1-yard score. Ward Banks connected with Brandon Wilson for the 2-point conversion
to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 14-8.
Harrison scored his second touchdown of the first half with 2:10 left
in the second quarter on an 18-yard run to increase Dora's lead to
|Wright and his staff made some adjustments at halftime, which resulted
in Dora doubling its first half output in the third quarter alone. Pierce
scored from a yard out to give Dora a 27-8 lead. Parker added to that lead
on the Bulldogs' next possession after a 20-yard run for a score, and only
six plays later, Woods scored on a 3-yard run that was set up by a Dora
blocked punt to give the Bulldogs a 40-8 lead at the end of three quarters.
Dora's final touchdown came after Woods ran 39 yards to paydirt with 11:57
to go in the game.
