One Year Old by Rick Watson
|Time flies when you're having fun.
I was doing some site maintenance and realized that it was first published
July 15th 2002. We've learned a lot in a year. Looking back at earlier pages,
many were badly designed, but thanks to those who have contributed stories,
pictures, and interviews the content, I think, has been consistently good
and we've had over 27,300 hits as of today.
Through my interaction with you, the alumni of Dora High School, I have
learned a great deal about our little corner of the world. I learned about
Mary McGinnis, and Ms. Dorothy Ellison, about Faye Bobo and what it was
like driving a school bus in the 60's. I saw our community come together
and cheer our football team to the best season in recent memory. I grieved
along with you over the deaths of
Courtney Ellis, Reverend Rickey Peterson,
Pete Troupe, Bo Cashman, Rhonda Weldon, Liz Burkes and the others alumni
who passed on since we began publication.
Someone asked me recently: "what to you hope to accomplish with the
website?" I only hope that we can pull our community closer together...
I hope I can continue to provide a place where people far and near can
keep up with what's happening in our community....and occasionally put
a smile on someone's face.
I'd love to have more pictures both old and new of our alumni. I'd love
for people to think of the website and send me notes when alumni get married,
when they pass away, when they have children and grandchildren, when they
have something they want to share. I want to be a part of something in
which we can all be proud.
I wanted to give special thanks to Nat Self for his continuing story "The
Place That We Call Home"; to Asa Faith Bobo Randolph for writing
and promoting the website; to Lacy Barnett who wrote a great article for
the site and sends me tidbits and ideas for stories; to Bobbye Wade for
her help and support; and to Joe Moon who had covered Dora High School
Baseball for the site; and to the countless other who have helped.
I especially want to thank my wife Jilda who has worked hard writing,
taking pictures, promoting the site, and being understanding when I spend
countless hours on this computer.
Happy Birthday www.dorahighschool.com and hopefully we will have many
