Dora spanks Corner Yellow Jackets

Story from The Daily Mountain Eagle by Brian Hale
CORNER — Dora capitalized on four Corner turnovers in the first half and never let the Yellow Jackets get back in the game, earning a 41-12 win Friday at Corner Stadium.

The win gave coach Johnny Wright his 75th victory as the Bulldogs head coach.

Charles Clay and Ki Babbs led Dora’s ground attack. The duo combined for four touchdowns. Clay rushed 17 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns while Babbs had 95 yards and two scores on 12 carries.

Dora quarterback Gosha enjoyed his best night passing, as he connected on 7 of 8 passes for 106 yards and two TDs.

Corner took the first possession of the game at the 20-yard line, and on third down a bad snap over the head of quarterback Chase Best was recovered by Dora at the Corner 3-yard line. It took the Bulldogs four plays to get in the end zone as Clay scored on a 3-yard run. Jack Spradlin, who converted 5 of 6 extra points, made it 7-0.

Corner (1-3, 0-3), started its next set of downs at the 36-yard line, and on the first play Dora intercepted a Chris Huff pass at the 45-yard line. This time the Yellow Jacket defense stiffened, but Spradlin trapped Corner deep in its own end with a 42-yard punt to the four yard line. On the fourth play, Dora again picked off an errant Corner pass at the 36, for the third turnover of the first quarter.

Dora quarterback Steven Gosha connected with Day Day Freeman from nine yards out with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. Spradlin kicked it to 14-0 for Dora.

On its next possession Dora (3-2 2-1) went on a six-play, 71-yard drive that was capped off by Clay's second touchdown of the game, this one on an eight-yard run, as Dora stretched its lead to 21-0.

Dora's final first half score came after yet another Corner miscue. The Bulldogs recovered a fumble at the Yellow Jackets 29-yard line and took one play for the second Gosha to Freeman strike of the game for a 28-0 lead. Corner would get on the scoreboard just before halftime when Huff hit Jacob Crew on a six-yard pass, leaving the halftime score at 28-6 in favor of Dora.

The Bulldogs put together a seven-play, 65-yard drive to pay dirt to start the third quarter as Ki Babbs rumbled in from five yards out for the only points of the third quarter as Dora built a 34-6 advantage.

Dora's final points came at the 3:07 mark of the fourth quarter as Babbs again found the end zone on a seven-yard run. Spradlin again was good for a Dora 41-6 lead.

Corner got the final score with 35 seconds left when Huff scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

For Corner, Chris Huff was 10 of 15 passing for 143 yards and accounted for two scores. Dora was led on defense by A.J. Smoot and Stephen Forrest.

Corner travels to Oak Grove next week while Dora has a week off and travels to Fairfield on Oct. 3.
