Funeral service for James "Jim" N. McGowen, 88, of Auburn is 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at Auburn United Methodist Church Founder's Chapel. Dr. George Mathison is officiatingJim McGowen. Burial will be held in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday from 1-2:30p.m. prior to the service at Auburn United Methodist Church. Mr. McGowen passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Oak Park Retirement Center. He was born September 21, 1925 in Walker County, AL.
He attended Auburn University and majored in Business Administration and was a member of the honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Blue Key. He played football, was team captain in 1950, lettered in 1949 and 1950 and was the leading rusher in the 1949 victory over Alabama. Mr. McGowen's successful business career began with the Bell System and AT& T in 1951.
He held numerous management and executive positions in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and New York. He served on the Board of Directors of several companies during his career and rose to Senior Vice President of South Central Bell, retiring in 1986.
He served in the US Navy during and immediately after WWII mostly in the Pacific. Mr. McGowen was civic minded. He served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries and Salvation Army in Mississippi, Mississippi Economic Council, and Auburn Cemetery Board.
He was an active participant of Auburn United Methodist Church, Auburn Football Letterman's Club, Telephone Pioneers, and Auburn Alumni Association.
He loved athletics, was an avid golfer, and worked several crossword puzzles every day. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, loyal friend and was cherished by those who knew him. He was humble and known for his integrity and fairness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma Ennis McGowen and Jackson R. McGowen; and brothers, Jackson R. McGowen, Jr. and Neil "Dick" E. McGowen. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Joy T. McGowen of Auburn; son, James N. McGowen, Jr. (Judy) of Belleville, IL ; daughter, Ramsey McGowen (Bill Hamil) of Johnson City, TN ; grandchildren, Jason McGowen, Robin Gergen (Shannon), Joseph M. Hamil; great grandsons, Kyle and Alexander Gergen; and several nieces. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to United Methodist Children's Home in Selma, AL.
