Dora Has Their Way With Corner Yellow Jackets
Story from The Daily Mountain Eagle -- Brian Hale
DORA — The Dora Bulldogs turned in an outstanding performance on both offense and defense to rout the Corner Yellow Jackets 55-10 Thursday night at Horace-Roberts Field. Dora's offense totaled 520 yards on the night — with 441 coming on the ground.
Cody Staten led the team with 223 rushing yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns.
Caleb May also contributed well to the Bulldog offense, picking up 113 yards on 9 carries and scrambling for two scores. May also connected on 4 of 5 passes for 79 yards and threw for two touchdowns. "This was a total team effort," first-year Dora coach Dusty Goode said. "I'm proud of every one of our guys.
The kids are really buying in. We are already looking forward to next week. Hopefully we can get better, starting with Oak Grove." The Bulldog defense held Corner to 184 total yards of offense, led by Cade Stone's 6 tackles.
Dora also forced three Yellow Jacket turnovers that led to scores. Dora's first score of the game was set up by a 24-yard interception by Kai Thomas, which led to a 32-yard run by Staten to put Dora up 7-0 after a good extra-point kick by Jacob Hicks. After holding Corner to a punt on the ensuing series,
Dora drove 78 yards on 7 plays, with Staten scoring on a 50-yard run to put the Bulldogs further ahead 14-0 after Hicks' extra-point kick. Stone blocked a Yellow Jacket punt on the next possession, to set up a 19-yard touchdown strike from May to Demarcus Kirk.
The extra point from Hicks extended Dora's lead to 21-0. After a Corner score that closed the Bulldog lead to 21-7, Dora answered with a 7-play, 78-yard drive that concluded with May taking the ball in from 4 yards out — giving the Bulldogs a 28-7 edge.
Corner ended the first half with a 26-yard field goal to shorten the deficit to 28-10.
The second half saw the Dora offense on the move again quickly and often, with May connecting on a 19-yard pass to Deangelo Pendleton to extend the Bulldogs lead to 35-10.
Near the end of the third quarter, May scored on a 95-yard run, which was followed by a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown by Sean Aaron to make Dora's lead 48-10. The Bulldogs' final score of the game came midway through the fourth quarter following a 6-play, 52-yard drive as Brenden Pruitt scored on a 1-yard run to reach the 55-10 final.
Through six games, the Bulldogs have now rushed for 2,078 yards, an average of 346 yards per game. Dora has now won seven of its last eight meetings against the Yellow Jackets, including five in a row at home. The Bulldogs (5-1) host the Oak Grove Tigers next Friday night in a Class 4A, Region 5 match-up.
After Oak Grove, Dora makes a trip to region frontrunner Midfield. Read more: Daily Mountain Eagle - Dora piles up yardage in rout of Corner
