Beloved Teacher at Dora High School passes away
Curtis Ellison confirmed that he mother passed away last night and her
funeral is being planned for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at New Horizon. There will be
visitation ahead, probably from 12:30 to 2:00 but the visitation hour is not yet
confirmed.
OBIT: Dorothy Iola Stanfield Ellison, age 100 formerly of Sumiton, Alabama died
Friday
December 9, 2016 at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home in Florence, Alabama. She
was
born October 5, 1916 in Clay County, Alabama. She was the daughter of William
Stead
Stanfield and Carrie Belle (Dunseith) Standfield. She was a member of the Sumiton
United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities for nearly seven
decades.
She was a graduate from Judson College and held a Master’s Degree from the
University
of Alabama. She taught at Dora High School for thirty years before she retired in
1977, instilling a love of science in many students. She was named “Alabama
Teacher of
the Year” in 1959. In the same year, she was honored by McCall’s Magazine as one
of
the nation’s top ten teachers.
An avid reader, Mrs. Ellison served on the Alabama Library Services Board. She
chaired
the Carl Elliott Regional Library Board and the Sumiton Public Library Board for
many
years. For her service to the Sumiton Public Library and her community, the town
of
Sumiton proclaimed January 16, 2011 “Dorothy Ellison Day”
Funeral service will be held Tuesday December 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the New
Horizon
Memorial Chapel in Dora, Alabama. Rev. Tom Salter and Rev. Mark Adams will
officiate.
Burial will follow at Morgan Cemetery. Family will receive friends for visitation
from
12:30 pm until 2:00 pm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ira Ellison and son, James M.
Ellison.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Curtis (Celia) Ellison of Oxford, Ohio; daughters,
Anne (Lowry) Hobbs of Mooresville, North Carolina; Jeanne (Dean) Baughman of
Florence,
Alabama; daughter-in-law, Marguerite (James) Ellison; eleven grandchildren and
seven
great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Sumiton
United Methodist Church or the Sumiton Public Library.

Dora, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016, at his residence.
He was a retired school teacher after 38 years of service and a member of
Aldridge Community Missionary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends today, May 1, 2016, from 1 p.m. until
service
time in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel, with funeral services beginning
at 3
p.m. Burial will follow in the New Horizon Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jake
Hartley and the Rev. J.D. Dickinson will officiate.
Moon was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lillie Moon;
brother,
Charlie Thomas Moon; and sister, Euvaughn Tucker.
His survivors include his wife, Sharon Nix Moon; son, Jeremy Moon
(Morgan);

away December 2, 2008. She received a bachelor's degree from Howard College

University) and a master's degree and a doctorate of education degree from the
University of Alabama. She taught at Dora High School and Hewitt-Trussville
Elementary
School.

"ERIN" HUBBERT, age 86, died April 27, 2005 at Hope Hospice
Shell Point, Fort Myers, FL. She taught at Dora High School from 1942-1944.
Erin was born November 20, 1918 in Walker County, Alabama, a daughter
of the late Thomas
Posey McConnell Hubbert and Annie Laura Fairley Hubbert. Erin was employed
by the Department of State for 35 years and resided in Falls Church, VA.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne Hubbert
Mullins; son-in-law, Thomas Mullins and granddaughter, Meaghan Leigh Mullins
of Fort Myers, FL;
Susan Erin Martin and granddaughter, Erin Lynn Welshans of Arlington,
VA;

Virginia Teaford Murray
MURRAY, VIRGINIA TEAFORD, of Dora, passed away on February 15, 2003. She
was born September 13, 1912, the first of the late Jacob Grover and Mary
Alsup Teaford. She married A. C. Murray, Jr. who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Athens College in 1936. She retired from Dora High
School after having taught for 32 years. She was a long time member of
the Sumiton Methodist Church. Virginia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma,
honary teachers society. She was active in the Walker County Homemakers
Club, often winning prizes for her quilts and other hand work. She took
great pride in her home and yard, constantly caring for her flowers. Two
brothers, and one sister predeceased her, Jacob Grover Teaford, Jr., Paul
W. Teaford, and Helen Teaford Ling. Survivors include three brothers and
one sister, Lloyd and his wife Helen Teaford of Savanah, Harvey and his
wife Betty Lois Teaford of Mobile, Fred and his wife Jacqueline Teaford
of Birmingham and Betty Jo Teaford of Jacksonville, IL; ten nieces and
nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews on whom she lavished her love. Services
will be held at Bell Funeral Home, Sumiton Tuesday, February 18, 2003
at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m.
at Bell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Sumiton United Methodist

Blow former teacher at Dora High School passed away on Saturday
December 27th. Mr. Blow was my history teacher in the tenth grade.
He was a very good teacher that loved history and took a personal
interest in his students. . He began his Teaching career in the Walker
County Board of Education at Dora High School and retired from the
Jefferson County Board of Education after teaching a combined total
of 30 years. He taught at Graysville School, Minor Jr. High School
and Edgewater School. He was manager of the Graysville Swim Club for
28 years until it closed. His funeral was December 30th and he was
burried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.

Bonnie H. Minor
Bonnie H. Minor, 94, of Dora died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at
Cordova Health Care Center. Her funeral was held on January 7th. Mrs.
Minor worked for many years in the lunchroom at Dora High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Minor, and son,
Charles Minor.
She is survived by her son, Joe Minor and his wife, Frankie of Cordova;
sisters, Grace Oliver of Birmingham and Edith Sasser of Peachtree
City, Ga.; brothers, Roger Duncan and his wife, Peggy of Dora and
Omer Duncan and his wife, Colleen of Kimberly; grandchildren, Chuck
