January 16th Declared Dorothy Ellison Day in Sumiton
Sunday, January 16, 2011, has been declared Dorothy Ellison Day by the City of Sumiton. There will be a reception at the Library at Sumiton City Hall from 2:00 – 3:30. The City and the Board of the Library will be making presentations.
Mrs. Ellison, started teaching at Dora High School in the fall of 1952 and she retired from Dora 1977. She taught Biology to every tenth grader that came through Dora for many years…until the numbers became overwhelming and help was hired. She really enjoyed teaching the boys and girls that came to Dora, especially the seniors. The seniors were more mature and easier to reach. When asked if she ever had problems with any of the students, she had to think a long while to come up with and instances where students behaved badly.
Mrs. Ellison is being honored by the City of Sumiton for her many years of service on the library board, her teaching career and community service. To see pictures from the event, click here.
